MAYA has actively supported the handicraft cluster of Channapatna, Ramanagara District, Karnataka for more than 20 years.

Channapatna has been home to the lacware craft practiced in the region for over 200 years because of the trees that grow there.

Lacware handcraft is an important source of livelihoods for the local population of Channapatna.

MAYA has transformed the way toys are made in the Channapatna handicraft cluster by

A Common Facility Centre (CFC) was constructed, and new machineries were installed with the support of MSME-SFURTI scheme for better productivity and increase artisans’ income by providing infrastructure and technology

MAYA also was able to get funds from NABARD for formation and nurturing of intensive Major Off-farm Producer Organization(OFPO), through which identified 10 small local manufacturing units in  various artisan clusters called Spokes. These Spokes have standard lathes and other required tools which are close to the artisan’s houses, a clean and safe working environment specially for women artisans.
